This is a fascinating discussion. I focused on her comments about the criminalization of poverty. It is a powerful truth. I hope this thread can take on a dynamic exchange.

Gabriella, could provide your perspective on the level of sexual assaults against women and children. Do the numbers in the US media track reality?

What about colored arm bands, hillside border spotters, stash houses ? I maintain most successful crossings have paid a cartel tax.

Hi Scott! Thanks for your note.

There is a vast range of ways in which smuggling facilitators organize their journeys. One of them does involve paying fees. But paying fees does not make you a member of a group. I really encourage you to listen to the podcast, because I do my best to explain this element. Thanks!

Mostly she backs away from cartel connections. Los coyotes will cross anyone. But don’t cheat the local gangsters of their cut.

Actually, smuggling facilitators -- those interested in not getting caught -- will not cross just about anyone. They manage risk. If a smuggler tells you otherwise, run away from him/her!
