In election years, U.S. politicians treat migrants as dangerous, flat, or faceless, and claim enforcement is the only solution to the “crisis.” A shelter in Nogales offers a different perspective.
A powerful and poignant testament to the beautiful resilience and instinct to collaborate among humans who are flung into difficult circumstances beyond their control. Of course the corporate media, as a kneejerk amplifier of draconian bipartisan border narratives, would fail to recognize the stubborn beauty and urgent hope embedded in this shelter. Thank you, as always, for shining a bright light to challenge the darkness.
"This beautiful, alternative view of the border"...The picture you describe (and have been doing so for such a long time) makes one wonder why its beauty continues to go unrecognized by so many and ache for so much potential beauty lost to all of us because of it.
This shelter, a place to stay 'as long as the asylum process' takes. Long enough to create community and plant a garden.

Beautiful story, beautifully written. I've been reading Camille Dungy's Soil--some resonance there.
Will check into that book for sure!
