Thank you for shedding light on this very important issue that seems to be back on the 4Ts agenda. Over a decade ago, the Yaqui people and neighboring ranchers on the south of Sonora opposed a similar project which intended to take the water of the Yaqui Valley, a main source for agricultural and cattle ranching economies in the region, and funnel that resource to Hermosillo. The Yaqui people and surrounding allied communities opposed the project leading to the unjust jailing of several leaders. Some were even murdered by interests groups. The light at the end of the tunnel was that at least the people of south Sonora won that battle and Governor Padrés who ran the project was sent to jail for corruption. But this old-school PRI-styled like “development” project appears to be back in currency and we need to be in continual opposition to hollowing and extractivist so-called “development” projects History has taught us that these types of enterprises have not worked in the past and will absolutely not work for the future of Sonora.
